Dachau Concentration Camp

While on our stay in Munich we took a small trip to the Dachau Concentration Camp. Dachau was the first camp for political prisoners established under the Nazi regime. Walking through the steel gates emblazoned with “Arbeit macht frei” (Work will make you free) the steely silence and cold feel of the grounds sent a chill up the spine.

Both the crematorium, purpose built for the industrial removal of bodies and the barracks, where people were cramped and subject to medical experiments (testing malaria, hypothermia, extreme pressures and phlegmon) stand as a reminder to the commonplace cruelty of the SS soldiers.
